Configuring property indexes specifies which properties should be indexed for best performance. Rebuilding property indexes updates them with the metadata of new documents or object tags so that the new items can be found as quickly as older items. You only need to configure or rebuild property indexes after having cleared them as described in Disabling automatic indexing. You should rebuild the property indexes after you create or modify view filters as described in Creating and editing view filters.
When selecting the properties to index, observe the following guidelines:
Index the properties that are most likely to be used for searches in the Search pane (for example, the document number or file name).
Note By default, SQL Server does not recognize the hyphen (-) as a searchable character. If indexed properties will include values that contain hyphens (such as document numbers or filenames), you should configure a custom stoplist as described in the SQL Server documentation.
